Don’t be afraid of Information Technology!

Tags

Well, after all of last week’s ruffle about our new enemy Information Technology, what can I write to make an approach to answer the initial question (Friend or foe?) from a different approach?

It is to some extent unfair to denounce this whole stuff as worthless and evil as it has its benefits.

Let us first think of the Arab spring that was supported to such an enormous extend by modern means of communication.

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the 2nd and final act of the exclusive interview with the owners of Mein Haus am See – Stephan and Claudia. I am pleased to see you all again!
After introducing the idea that is behind the concept of Mein Haus am See, I now want to give you some insight into the business in practice.

Would you say that your business attracts a specific group of customers? If so, how would you describe them?

Claudia: I do have to say that Stefan has excellent taste when it comes to interior design. He just follows his instincts for what he thought looks best – he/we did not try to be super stylish or follow mainstream design. So, we had no particular group of customers in mind when we opened Mein Haus am See. Continue reading

Information Technology – Friend or Foe?

Tags

From computers to laptops to touchpads; phones, mobile phones, smartphones; text messages, emails, voicemails; e-papers, online news, Google, YouTube, facebook, twitter, WordPress; online sales, e-commerce, online banking, … What can I say? I must admit I am far from being the first to touch this topic; it is actually one of those that might have been discussed often enough.  However, it is something that weighs heavily on my mind.

For me, it has never been that much of a big deal, cause I had always thought I could handle it. Facebook is normal. Google it, before you open an encyclopedia. Locate and navigate it via internet, before you buy a map or ask your way through Berlin. I grew up with a certain amount of technology that already the generation of my parents is not used to. And that was okay. I did not think much about it, because no one forced me to use it.

There are more than 300 bars and restaurants in Berlin-Mitte. How could one ever begin finding the right spot? I will try to make your bar-life a bit easier by introducing you to my favorite place in Berlin. Mein Haus am See is such a well-established café and bar at Rosenthaler Platz that it is difficult to believe it only opened in 2009! Mein Haus am See has successfully captured Berlin’s atmosphere and –in my eyes – represents this very unique city very well.

I was very lucky to be able to arrange an interview with the owners of the bar: Stephan and Claudia. Neither of them has ever studied business. Stephan studied politics and later discovered his passion for literature, after which he worked as a publisher. Opening a bar was Claudia’s idea. During our two hour talk they explained their business idea and revealed their recipe to success. Continue reading

Do you know that we dedicate more than ¼ of our life to formal education. Furthermore, if you want to be successful nowadays, it is necessary to study and develop during all your life. We are studying constantly and every day… Teachers tought us how to read and to write, but no one thought us how to read (study) effectively.

Reading effectively is not a magic. That is a skill which can be learned with practice. In addition, it contributes a lot in breaking all bad reading habits that you have developed at school. To be a fast reader is not as important as to be an effective one.  There are some great techniques that you can apply – reading fast and emphasizing on key blocks of words-“Chunks”.

A Present from the Desert

Image

The Bedouins of the world call it the „white gold of the desert“: Camel milk. They claim to be able to live more than two weeks solely on this exceptional substance and dates. In this world, there are around 20 million camels in over a hundred countries. Since more than 3000 years, the milk is well known for its health and curing qualities mostly in the Arabic and African region.

Up until recently it has not really reached our circles of latitude, however, it is actually a great business opportunity.

Being a photographer in Berlin means facing a LOT of competition. There are more photographers than assignments especially if your professional focus is on documentary and event photography. It sure is, but the photographer’s creativity must go beyond his perspective through his camera – he must be innovative when it comes to business. Continue reading

How did you…. edit your authors’ page?

Tags

As some people have asked me, how I designed our authors‘ page, I decided to give you a “how to…” tutorial this week.
However, first I have to make clear that I am far away from being a pro with technology, rather do I press every button to see what happens next and thus apply “learning-by-doing” of which I am convinced to be the best learning method.
